It’s Friday afternoon. Traditionally–our use of “traditionally” in this case is really loose, loose enough for a monthlong tradition to qualify–this is when we’d post on a “Call Me Maybe” parody or meme or other sort of quirky Carly Rae-related bobbin on the Internet. But screw that. There’s a more pressing matter to address: is there anybody left in the country who hasn’t heard the single? There’s got to be–after all, there are still people left in the country who haven’t heard Adele’s 21, judging by its sales. Turns out Spin found one “Call Me Maybe” virgin, and got him to liveblog it. It’s 5 p.m. You’ve probably got a few hours to kill before going out or eating dinner or diving into a pool of ice to flee this heat wave; go read that. Learn how “Call Me Maybe” is like Robyn and Mad Men and Selena Gomez! There’s the pink text; click it maybe.
For the nay-sayers–yes, it’s completely possible for someone writing about music to have escaped this song. I write a great deal every day about music, and I still went half of 2011 without having heard “Pumped Up Kicks.” So don’t go doubting the writer, no matter whether you think “Call Me Maybe” parodies and covers violate the spirit–if not the letter–of the law, or how apt that use of “my curiosity overtook me” in the intro is. It’s not as if 50% of the people loving “Call Me Maybe” could tell you the name of Carly Rae Jepsen’s EP.
