Every country music awards show wants to connect on that male/female co-host chemistry that the CMAs have scored with Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley (four years and counting!), but that chemistry is not easily come by. Sometimes you have to roll the dice on a less-than-traditional duo and hope that the results bear out your unconventional decision. So the CMT Awards have selected Toby Keith to be one of their hosts this year, which makes sense—he’s loud, he’s occasionally likeable, and you never know when he might say something offensive, all of which are key qualities in an award-show host. But the female host is much less of a no-brainer selection: Veronica Mars and (unseen) Gossip Girl star Kristen Bell.
This is a bit of a puzzler, no doubt. Bell has no obvious ties to country music—she’s not secretly engaged to Luke Bryan or anything, she didn’t play a down-on-her-luck country starlet in a movie once upon a time, she hasn’t even played the love interest in a Billy Currington video. Hell, she’s not even from the south—she’s from Michigan, and is apparently a big Detroit Red Wings fan (though she isn’t even married to a hockey player like Carrie Underwood). There is no obvious reason why Bell would be called on to co-host the show, beyond the fact that she’s a relatively famous person and doesn’t outwardly despise country music. (“Country music makes me happy,” she tells People, also claiming a musical crush on Miranda Lambert.)
But hey, maybe that’s what it takes—perhaps she and Keith (20 years Bell’s senior) will have some kind of “She’s a little bit Hollywood, I’m a little bit Trailerhood” type repartee that will be just what the show needs. Or maybe he’ll make some kind of awkward drunk pass at her and she’ll spend the entire night seething at him. That’d be fun too.
